Summer is here and it is the perfect time to plan special programs for the older adults whom you are working with. The Activity Assistant students at Drake Medox College have put together a number of ideas for sizzling fun this summer season!
Hawaiian BBQ– Invite your clients on a Hawaiian adventure with a Luau BBQ. To keep your guests cool, serve a sparkling pineapple punch and fresh watermelon slices. Everyone can don hula skirts and Hawaiian shirts and the courtyard can be decorated with bright flowers and tiki masks made in advance by the participants.
Camping Reminisce- Set up a mock camping area featuring a tent for your participants to reminisce about their experiences in nature. Be sure to include a cooler, a lantern, and a faux campfire. The participants can share their adventures of outdoor experiences such as fishing and canoeing while toasting some smores. Remember to engage the senses with sounds of nature such as birds chirping and smells such as the scent of pine aromatherapy.
Garden Party– Summer boasts fresh and delicious treats from the garden, so why not celebrate with a garden party? The table can be set with beautiful flowers from the garden arranged by the participants. Each place setting can offer a small clay pot with a package of seeds and the participants can plant their seeds during the program and take with them when the program concludes.
The students would also like to remind you to consider safety when delivering your programs, so be sure to offer sunglasses, sunscreen and hats during summer programs. Also, provide shade for your participants and do not go out if it is too hot. Provide plenty of liquids such as water or juices or treats such as popsicles to keep participants hydrated.
