With the ongoing growth of Canada’s aging population, healthcare workers who provide support for the elderly are in high demand, and their role is extremely crucial. They must be compassionate and patient, and provide loving care to the clients they serve. It takes a certain type of person to be able to become a successful healthcare worker.Filipinos are known to excel at taking care of elderly people because of their compassion towards their seniors, and their passion for helping others. Many also arrive to Canada with formal training and/or experience as nurses and caregivers which makes a career as a certified Health Care Assistant a very natural fit.
Following is an excerpt of a testimonial from a Drake Medox College student Maria who emigrated from the Philippines with the drive to make a better life for her family, while still fulfilling her love of elderly care:
“Since I was young, growing up in the Philippines, I have always wanted to help other people. I felt the best way to do this was to go into the medical field, and with that in mind I pursued a degree in nursing. I felt happy and proud when I achieved my goal, and after I graduated I enjoyed my time working as a nurse in the Philippines very much. However, I am an ambitious person and wanted to give my family the best I could in life.
After working in Singapore as a Nurse’s Assistant, I decided to come to Canada in order to provide a better life for myself and my family. After arriving in Canada, it was my intention to work as a Registered Nurse eventually. However, due to a number of reasons, including the need to retrain for many years, I decided to pursue a different area of health care. I explored and attained my B.C. Care Aide Registry number. However, this did not greatly improve my employment situation, so I decided that the best path for me was to become a certified Health Care Assistant. With that in mind, I began my training in December of 2013 at Drake Medox College. After completing my training I want to find a job where I can help as many people as possible. I have a special interest in geriatrics, and hope to be able to work with older clients to help provide them with the best possible quality of life. However, any area of health care where I can use my Health Care Assistant skills would be satisfying for me.
Thank you to Myrine at Drake Medox College for her encouragement while taking this course. I also appreciate my teacher, Miss Charlene for all her efforts.
