Lorena’s Story

November 23, 2016 Posted in Blog Posts

It all started when I came to Canada and worked under the Live-in Caregiver program for two years. After I finished my contract with my employer I had no idea where I would go from there. Many questions went through my mind, and there were so many things I wanted to do in my life.

At first I took any jobs I could get to support my family, which struggled financially. I encountered many challenges along the way, but I come from a family which believes that if you want something bad enough in life you must push yourself beyond your limits and make sacrifices to achieve it.  I decided to set a new goal for myself, and looked for an opportunity to study.

Fortunately the Vancouver Committee for Domestic Workers’ and Caregivers Rights (CDWCR), an organization I have been a member of since arriving here, gave me the chance I needed. I attended one of their workshops and was selected for a full tuition scholarship offered by Drake Medox College.  CDWCR and DRAKE MEDOX supported me in my pursuit of my dreams, and I am now a certified Community Support Worker!

I am forever grateful to my instructors for their inspiration, and to Drake Medox for the opportunity at this scholarship which will forever change my life.  I am already employed and looking forward to many more years in this very rewarding career.

To others in similar positions, I offer you my encouragement to never give up on your goals; for where there is a will, there is always a way!

EMPLOYER TESTIMONIAL

“We highly regard Community Support Work related schooling/credentials when making hiring decisions. The schooling indicates to us that applicants have some systematic training in the field and are passionate about quality care; this means they are likely to be high performers and stay longer because they fully understand what the job involves. Retention is a huge consideration, those that are likely to stay longer will always be highly sought after as it takes time to build working relationships and relationships with person served.”

“Please find attached the attendance and evaluations for all of the students who completed their practicum with us from February 8th – 15th. It was great to speak with their buddies because they all had such positive feedback, and really enjoyed working with the students. We really enjoy having the students here, and we look forward to working with you more in the future!”

Success Story

Since completing the Health Care Assistant training course at Drake Medox College, I have gained the necessary knowledge, training, skills and confidence to work effectively with the elderly, children and people with developmental disabilities. I believe this course has helped pave the way for greater job opportunities and I since successfully been hired both as a live-in Manager and as a Life Skill Worker. Thank you so much Drake Medox College.
