Daryl Lagayan HCA Instruction

Daryl Lagayan, one of our newest instructors here at Drake Medox College, tells us a bit about himself in this interview.

What led you to your current role as a Health Care Assistant Instructor?

I have been working in healthcare for over 7 years, and am currently an LPN serving the residents of a beautiful care home in the heart of Vancouver.  Because I find my work so rewarding, I am always eager to share my experiences and knowledge with others who aspire to work in the field.  It is because of this that I decided to take on a teaching assignment at Drake Medox College.

What is the best piece of advice you offer your students?

“Memorize and you will forget…understand and you will remember.”

What are some of the prevailing trends you are seeing out in the field?

Advances in technology are definitely impacting the way we conduct our day-to-day work more and more.  Many sites are now equipped with Electronic MAR and IPads for charting.  Even residents are becoming more technologically savvy using cell phones and Skype to communicate with their families.  This really puts the onus on us as instructors to ensure that our graduates are ready to meet the ever evolving demands of their roles as Health Care Assistants.

Demand for males is particularly high in the field right now; what advice would you give to men who are considering a career as a Health Care Assistant?

I can tell you from my own personal experience that men who are making this career choice for the right reasons will find this job very rewarding.  The earning potential is very good, and the opportunity to use this program as a stepping stone to other healthcare professions like nursing makes this a great choice!

What are your interests outside of your work?

I very much enjoy photography and music.  I actually have a little studio in my home concentrating on portrait and child photography.  I also love to take landscape and architectural photos whenever I travel.  As for music, I have been playing a number of different instruments since I was about 10 years old, so this is also something I enjoy!

“We highly regard Community Support Work related schooling/credentials when making hiring decisions. The schooling indicates to us that applicants have some systematic training in the field and are passionate about quality care; this means they are likely to be high performers and stay longer because they fully understand what the job involves. Retention is a huge consideration, those that are likely to stay longer will always be highly sought after as it takes time to build working relationships and relationships with person served.”

HR Generalist

“Thank you Drake Medox College for assisting us in our hiring. We gained 5 staff from our posting and hope to gain more. Again our gratitude for producing high caliber members of the health care industry.”

“Please find attached the attendance and evaluations for all of the students who completed their practicum with us from February 8th – 15th. It was great to speak with their buddies because they all had such positive feedback, and really enjoyed working with the students. We really enjoy having the students here, and we look forward to working with you more in the future!”

Success Story

Program: ESL / HCA Drake Medox College helped me to achieve my main goal – to become a Healthcare Assistant. They helped me also to become more confident in aspects of speaking and understanding. The ESL-HCA Program at Drake Medox College is the best study program I’ve been to. My Instructors were very supportive. My first impression of the ESL Program was “same old basic English again,” but I was wrong. I thought I didn’t need it because I can speak English. The ESL classes helped me to know how to pronounce properly, use proper grammar and even to create a formal paragraph. The important thing that the ESL Program did for me is to boost my confidence and to mold me into “a chocolate diamond” as Ate Myrine always says. The ESL-HCA Program is worth it and I enjoyed every class I attended. In several months I developed as an open-minded person, a knowledgeable student, a passionate Healthcare practitioner and a fluent user of the English language. As I move toward my new career, the ESL Program contributed a big part to my future work because I have learned how to be a good listener, a good reader and a good communicator. Indeed, I have become “ a diamond.” I am very thankful to Drake Medox College and my supportive Instructors for helping me along the way!
