Community Support Worker Student Daniel Belimac Shares His Experience

February 14, 2018 Posted in Blog Posts

I immigrated to Canada with my family in hopes of a seeking a better quality of life. Growing up my parents always encouraged me to seek out higher education to ensure that I could have a bright future. So when my mother graduated from Drake Medox as a Health Care Assistant, she persuaded me to look in to the programs offered at the college. That’s when I stumbled upon the Community Support Worker Program, which sparked my interest.  At that time I had no clue what the role of a CSW would entail so I continued to do research and found that many of my prerequisite courses for Psych Nursing correlated with CSW.   This interested me because I knew that an investment in this program could help me towards my future career goals.

My experience with the Community Support Worker Program so far has been great!  I am surrounded by peers who are passionate, creative and eager to start working in the field. The program instructor Taranjeet was very supportive in my transition into the program, and has assisted me in learning and implementing new tools and resources to enhance my knowledge and skills in assisting and supporting individual with developmental disabilities. One of the things I am enjoying most through this experience is learning new ways to teach individuals with developmental disabilities new skills using “task analysis.”  We have learned that we will encounter many persons served with communication deficits and learning disabilities. However, by teaching the task in steps, and using different resources such as picture boards, we can aid in promoting person center planning.

My career goal after finishing the CSW program is to enter a Psych Nursing program and utilize my experience as a Community support worker to advocate and empower the individuals I will serve to have a better quality of life.

I’d like to thank my instructor Taranjeet, my peers and all Drake Medox for all the support and encouragement I have received as I prepare for my future endeavors as a Community Support Worker. I am truly excited about the endless opportunities lie ahead of me in this career!

The schooling indicates to us that applicants have some systematic training in the field and are passionate about quality care; this means they are likely to be high performers and stay longer because they fully understand what the job involves. Success Story

I would highly recommend Drake Medox to anyone wishing to pursue a career within the healthcare industry. For those still not convinced, I would strongly advise you to research this for yourself, as I am very confident you too will find Drake Medox offers better value for money compared to others - even some of my colleagues think so having attended more expensive schools.
